Feature blog post by Jeremy Wilcox, Secretary Manager, the RUC
We love our sport. And the RUC at Turner loves supporting our local teams. Yes, our main sports following lies with Lawn Bowling and Rugby Union in the ACT, but did you know we also proudly support many other amateur sports in the Inner North? From netball to cricket, and everything in between, here’s a list of the local sporting teams we proudly support:
- ANU Sport
- ANU Cricket
- ANU Touch Football
- OWLS Rugby Union
- UC Hockey
- RUC Ravens Cricket
- Yabbies Cricket
- Belconnen Sharks Juniors League
- Inner North Netball Club
- ANU Cycling
- ACT Junior Rugby Union
- Bowls ACT
It’s common knowledge that clubs provide important social environments for their local communities, but it’s not so commonly known that clubs also play a vital part in supporting sport in Canberra.
Canberra Clubs contribute a whopping $131 million to sport and infrastructure, and more than two thirds of clubs maintain sports facilities. To put things in perspective Canberra Clubs maintain 400 hectares of sporting fields in Canberra, and when compared to the ACT Government which ably maintains 300 hectares, you can really see the scale of that contribution.
The RUC itself manages three bowling greens thanks to our loyal members who contribute through their continued patronage, as well as providing meeting and function facilities to these local sporting groups.
We are also very proud to announce that the RUC is the official away game venue for the Brumbies this year, kicking off with the Western Force v Brumbies game this Friday night from 9.30pm.
The Brumbies have had an incredible start to the season beating two of last year’s semi-finalists. The South African leg of the season will be a real litmus test for how the Brumbies will fare this year. The forwards look particularly promising and there is quality right throughout the team, including on the bench. It’s like watching the All Blacks but this time they are on our side (did I just say that)!
Come and watch the away games at the club on the big screen and six plasma televisions with stadium sound, and sample our Brumbies Away Game Only specials including $5 Hahn Super Dry Schooners, $5 mini crispy chicken strips and chips, or $5 mini fish and chips on the night of Brumbies away games (excluding the 4am kick off time for The Stormers because our licence won’t extend to those hours).
So, come on in and be part of the reinvigorated Bowling Club in Turner – the New RUC – and experience a real community club where we value our sport, our local sporting groups and all our members who are looking for a sporting hospitality experience in the Inner North.
